Why Changing to a Career in Massage Therapy Is a Good Idea

Finding yourself in a favorable career that you love can be a tricky process. Many people choose something that sounds interesting and exciting and get a job just to find that they don’t love it as much as they thought they would. Others don’t choose at all. They simply find themselves entrenched in a job or industry that was never supposed to be long term, but they don’t know how to switch to something else.

For people in these circumstances, or a similar boat, changing careers can seem like a really big hurdle to jump with a lot of risk. If you have thought about massage therapy as a career, here are some reasons why it may be a great choice for you.

Workplace Versatility

Becoming a licensed massage therapist can open many doors in terms of where you can work. Massage therapists work in settings such as spas, hotels, gyms, for professional athletes or teams, or even on cruise ships. So, if you want to work in a serene and calm environment you can seek employment in a spa. If you want to work with high performance athletes you can look for a job with a sports organization. If you want to travel and see the world, apply to work on a cruise ship. There are so many possibilities that you should be able to find a place to work that you enjoy.

Helping Others

Many massage therapists are satisfied with their jobs because they get to help people. The nature of massage therapy is to relieve the stress, tension, and pain of your clients. When you are done with a massage appointment, clients leave feeling much better than they did when they first came in. Many times they will express how much better they feel to you after a visit. Knowing that you are helping people in this way can bring a great sense of gratification and job satisfaction.

Learning New Skills

Massage therapy requires that you continue to learn and grow. There are many different techniques, modalities, and specialties that you can learn. Once you become a licensed massage therapist, continually adding to your skill set is a good way to stay competitive and move upward in the industry. So, if you are the type of person who doesn’t want to sit around and get paid to do the same thing everyday all day, massage might be a good fit. You will always be changing things up and providing individualized services based on the needs of your client.

Industry Growth and Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics seems to think that starting a new career in massage therapy is a good idea as well. They project that the massage therapy industry is growing at a rate of 22%, which is much faster than the average for all other occupations. This means that changing to a massage therapy career can offer a lot of employment opportunity now and in the future.
